About Hakkin

Hakkin (ハクキンカイロ) is a hand warmer maker in Osaka, Japan. In 1923 it brought out the first pocket warmer to use a platinum catalyst, and it has made them ever since. Shinonome Co., Ltd. is an authorized Hakkin dealer, and every Hakkin warmer we sell is a genuine product.

Warmth without a flame

Inside the warmer, fuel soaks into cotton and its vapour rises through a burner coated with fine platinum. The platinum lets the vapour combine with oxygen at a low temperature, so it gives off heat steadily without ever catching fire. The flame you use at the start only wakes the catalyst up. Hakkin rates the heat at about 13 times that of a disposable warmer, and the warmer keeps working at −40°C.

Trusted in the cold

Hakkin warmers have travelled with the Olympic flame. They were a backup for carrying the flame for the 1964 Tokyo Games, and in 1998 the flame for the Nagano Winter Games was flown to Japan in Hakkin warmers.

A design that has lasted

The shape has hardly changed in decades. In 2012 it received the Good Design Long Life Design Award, given in Japan to designs that people have relied on for many years.

Made to be kept

A Hakkin warmer is refilled, not thrown away. The burner and the cotton are replaceable parts, so with a little care one warmer lasts for many winters.
